Matrix Retainer is a mechanical device that clamps the ends of a matrix band and tightens it around a tooth and designed to hold a matrix band in position on the tooth. A matrix band creates a temporary interproximal surface, and, when appropriate, a matrix retainer secures the matrix band in place. There are many different designs in current use. The Aver® Matrix Retainer, Ivory with Lateral Shields has claws which engage in holes strategically placed in the band to allow for teeth of different circumference; it can be used for posterior teeth with only one missing proximal wall.
